Priority Update: Advancing Licensure for Dietitians in Florida
Our public policy team is actively working on a strategic, stepped approach to joining the Dietitian Licensure Compact, with the goal of improving consumer access to qualified nutrition professionals across state lines.
The first step in this process is to modernize Florida’s Dietetics and Nutrition Practice Act so it aligns with the Academy’s vision for consumer protection and professional mobility. This alignment is critical, as Florida must enact specific compact language into law to officially join the Dietitian Licensure Compact. Learn more about the Compact
To guide these efforts, Florida will reference the Model Practice Act, which reflects our stance on licensure. This model provides a comprehensive, inclusive, and uniform framework that:
- Serves as a prototype that can be adapted to meet the unique needs of each state
- Protects consumers by identifying qualified nutrition providers and ensuring consistency in standards for those providing medical nutrition therapy
- Improves access to timely and cost-effective nutrition care for all Floridians
At the core of our advocacy is consumer protection. We believe every individual should be able to identify and access professionals who are qualified, competent, and ethical in their delivery of medical nutrition therapy.
Florida has also taken a step toward professional mobility by passing an interstate mobility act, which allows licensed practitioners from other states to practice in Florida under certain conditions. More information on licensure and mobility in Florida
We remain committed to moving Florida forward in joining the Dietitian Licensure Compact—ensuring our state continues to support the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based nutrition care across state lines.
