Answers to Challenge Questions
The financial stability of a volunteer organization is critical to its ability to serve its members with high-quality services. What strategies would you suggest as a means for ensuring financial stability?
If elected FAND Treasurer, I will collaborate with the outgoing Treasurer to ensure a smooth transition of duties to include a brief on the state of the FAND budget, scheduled due-outs, and anticipated income. Financial stability is, at its core, a balanced budget. I will work closely with the FAND President, President-Elect, and fellow executive leaders to foster clear communication regarding operations and strategic plan deliverables among all stakeholders. I will ensure the FAND President and fellow leaders are kept abreast of the financial position of the affiliate at all times, alert them of anticipated issues, and propose courses of action to overcome those issues. I will maintain a posture of continuous quality improvement by communicating opportunities for fiscally responsible spending.
Describe the skills and knowledge you possess or provide an example from your personal or work setting that demonstrates your ability to handle FAND finances in an accurate, efficient, and timely manner.
I have a proven track record of leadership both inside and outside the military. I am currently president of the North Florida Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (NFAND) and initiated the successful merger of First Coast (FCAND) and Gainesville (GAND) districts. This merger involved comprehensive financial management strategies to include the dissolution of GAND, addition of Sunbiz documentation to recognize FCAND DBA NFAND. I also caught and corrected a discrepancy with the Sunbiz EIN versus the IRS EIN listed for NFAND. Despite the turmoil within the naming and renaming associated with the merger combined with the EIN issues, I facilitated the filing of the necessary tax filings to close out GAND and the tax filings to update NFAND. I led the charge to update and balance our FCAND budget. I led the charge to establish a new bank account for NFAND since, upon assuming the role of President, I discovered the current bank account was charging astronomical fees each month. Opening the new bank account resulted in significantly fewer fees and the opportunity to avoid banking fees altogether with a minimum balance. I have a superb attention to detail, I am proficient with managing financial spreadsheet information, and I have a proven record of successful and efficient time management.
