Eligible pregnant, breastfeeding and post-partum women, infants and children under age 5 receive checks for nutritious foods. Nutritionists work closely with mothers to educate them about their families’ nutrition needs, encouraging them to build healthy habits for a lifetime. Monash University is a leading research institution based in Melbourne, Australia.  Monash innovations include the car safety belt, in vitro fertilization (IVF) and the Monash University Low FODMAP Diet.  A decade and a half ago, Monash researchers led by Peter Gibson, MD, recognized the role FODMAPs, a collection of short-chain carbohydrates that aren't absorbed properly in the gut, can play in triggering symptoms in people with IBS.  FODMAPs stands for fermentable, oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols.  Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is characterized by chronic, relapsing symptoms including lower abdominal pain and discomfort, bloating, wind, distension and altered bowel habit (ranging from diarrhea to constipation) but with no abnormal pathology.  One in seven adults suffer from IBS.
