Layla Silverman, RDN, LDN
I often hear registered dietitians say they want greater recognition and better compensation for the work they do. There is no better way to achieve this than to establish relationships within our state and position registered dietitians as the experts in food, nutrition and health.
The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) has created the State Policy Representative (SPR) position for just this purpose. The SPR is the key manager of state and local advocacy agendas and tactics. The SPR will organize and prepare Florida Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (FAND) members to engage with legislators, state officials and other leaders throughout the year. The SPR will also track state legislative and regulatory issues and oversee the FAND’s response to emerging opportunities and problems.
FAND’s Legislative Day is April 9, 2014. Our goal is for each FAND district to have at least one registered dietitian represented. The more dietitians we have present, the stronger our message that we are the experts in food, nutrition and health.
